How We Won an Award for Canada's Biggest Grocer on a $0 Budget

Most "viral" social comes with a budget behind it. Production. Paid media. A war chest.

We didn't have one.

No Frills, the largest grocery chain in Canada, needed to blow up its social media on the heels of a massive marketing push. The catch: zero dollars to spend on content. No shoot budget. No talent. No media buy.

So we used the only thing we had. Creativity.

The work that won

The standout was a video. A batch of old oil paintings had entered the public domain. Free to use, no rights to clear. So we took them and replaced the noses and mouths with our own. Me and my designer. The paintings were composited to hold No Frills and No Name products, and our faces reacted to them with real expressions. Set to public domain piano music.

It was strange. It was funny. It cost nothing but time and an idea.

Here's the thing about working inside a big corporation. Even stock photography costs A LOT of money, and clearing that budget can take longer than the campaign itself. Public domain sidesteps all of it. Free assets, no approvals, no waiting. The constraint became the shortcut.

That work, along with the rest of the calendar, won silver at the 2023 In-House Agency Forum Awards.

Why it worked

A budget buys polish. It doesn't buy attention.

The reason the painting video landed is the same reason all good grocery social lands: it understood the audience and refused to be boring. People don't follow a grocery brand for grocery content. They follow it for a reason to stop scrolling. We gave them one.

Every post we made for that brand was built on a single question: Why would anyone care? If we couldn't answer it, we didn't make it.

The numbers backed it up. The account outperformed the rest of the Loblaws banners by in 2023. On a budget of nothing.

What this means if you're a grocery or CPG brand

Constraints aren't the enemy of good work. They force it.

The brands that win in Canadian grocery aren't the ones who outspend. They're the ones who out-think. A clever idea travels further than an expensive one, and it does it for free.

That's the lane we live in. CPG, grocery, retail, in Canada, with the background to prove we know the aisle. If you're launching a grocery CPG brand here, or trying to make an existing one impossible to ignore, that's the work we do.

No budget required. Just a good reason to care.
